Term 3, Week 9

FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Journeying Together

Term 3 is rapidly drawing to a close, and our Year 12s will soon be entering their final weeks of schooling in Term 4.

Our Year 12s sincerely appreciate your prayers in the midst of the challenges they have faced, including personal, academic, and as a cohort. Their Primary School buddy classes have been a great source of encouragement and prayer, and I ask that you, our College community, continue to support and pray for them during their final term of school.

As the Year 12s approach their exams, several special events will be held to bid them farewell and celebrate their time at Cedar. Many of our Year 12s have been with us since Reception, and attending their final Chapel in Week 2 of next term will be a significant and often emotional way to bring their schooling to a close. They will also be the first Year 12 class to graduate under our new Principal, who will officially join us in Term 4.

Around the Campus

In this issue of CedarNews, our Board Chair introduces our incoming Principal, Mr Tim Heading. We also look at the fun-filled Run4Fun, discover what’s cooking in Food & Hospitality, go flying with the Year 9 Engineering Foundations students, and congratulate our entrants in the Royal Show Art and Photography competitions.

Primary School News

Lots of Run, So Much Fun!

The Primary School gathered together last Friday for Chapel, before beginning the annual Run4Fun, which had been postponed from Term 2.

Thankfully, it was a fantastic day for outdoor activities, and the students flooded the courts and oval, running strong for their teams. Along the way, students had the opportunity to earn ten extra laps if they won one of the ‘One Shot Wonders’ events. Our Sport Captains, Isaac, Liam, Ella, and Emily, created a video to show during Chapel demonstrating how to compete in these activities. Soon the ten lap cards were coming in and team laps were scoring into the hundreds!

Netball Challenge

After two sessions of running and activities, the students headed to the Sports Centre for the Staff vs Students Netball game. Students were keen to take on the staff, who played with a reduced team of 5, and were only able to shoot outside the netball circle. This proved a difficult task for staff and the Year 6 team were fighting fit and making them work hard! Going into half time scores were level and staff were confident. Students took an early lead in the second half, but some incredible shooting from Mr Wilson saw the staff level the scores. In the final minute, students went one goal up and Mr Wilson’s dream run came to an end. Students implemented the “short and sweet” and ate up the clock to be crowned victors for 2024!

Congratulations to Gould for winning the Run4Fun, with Jackson a very close second, Bradman third, and Laver 4th.

Thank you to all the staff for helping run the day, and our grounds staff for setting up. Thank you also to our Year 7 helpers who were excellent at running the activities and cleaning up.

Snapping Success

Cedar College was once again a keen participant in the 2024 Royal Adelaide Show.

For the first time this year, the Junior Photography was separated from the Junior Art, Craft, and Design, into its own competition. This provided the opportunity for more categories across each age group. Cedar students submitted 48 entries in the Junior Art, Craft, and Design competition, including a few from some of our High School students. A total of 6 medallions were awarded across all the categories.

The Junior Photography competition proved to be very successful for our students, with 12 medallions being awarded from a total of 34 entries. Two of our Year 8 students, Orlando S and Isaac C each entered four photographs in the 13-15-year-old age group and received 2 medallions each. This was almost half of the overall medallions awarded for that age bracket.

We also had one Year 6 student, Miranda, receive a 2nd place ribbon for the beautiful patchwork bag she entered into the Junior Textiles competition.

Day for Prefects

A unique opportunity was also provided for our Primary School Prefects this year when we were asked to bring some students to the Royal Show for the day to paint watercolour postcards to hand out to visitors to the art exhibits. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day creating and distributing the postcards.

We look forward to showcasing more of our students’ artwork in the 2025 Royal Show.

Interschool Competitions

The latter-part of Term 3 has seen Cedar students continue to achieve success in interschool and State sporting competitions.

SACSA Football

SACSA Football was held in Week 8, and the Year 7/8 boys were firing on all cylinders after being unable to make the Grand Final in the StateWide competition. The boys gathered arm-in-arm and, with a strong rev-up from Tyler Allison and Mr Jackman, were able to finish on top of the ladder undefeated with a dominate percentage over the other teams.

Thanks to the ongoing coaching from Mr Jackman, they continued their winning streak of 3 from 3 Grand Finals this year. The Year 7/8 Girls also played incredibly hard and finished a solid 3rd, improving greatly over the day.

Both Year 5/6 Boys and Girls teams found themselves in the Grand Final, with the girls leading the entire time in an outstanding performance against Tyndale. The Year 5/6 Boys had a sensational start, but even with a snap goal from Tyson on the siren, they lost by just 1 point. Both teams went home proud they gave all they could on the day. Thank you to Emily Little for coaching the girls to victory!

The Year 3/4 Boys and Girls had fantastic weather and a fabulous day developing their football skills. Thank you to Mr Gardner for coaching the girls and Mr Damien Grantham for coaching the boys.

State Athletics

Well done to Liam A for finishing 4th in the State in High jump and Isaac M for finishing 6th in the State in the 1500m with a PB of 5.21. This is the fourth year that these two boys have attended State Athletics, and we are extremely proud of them.

State Swimming Championships

Piper C competed in the state short course swimming championships and managed to achieve the following results:

1500m freestyle – 1st 14/15 girls
1st open female, 800m freestyle – 1st 14/15 girls
3rd open female, 200m butterfly – 2nd
14/15 girls, 400m freestyle – 2nd 14/15 girls.

Congratulations, Piper, on some great achievements!

Engineering Takes Off

Squadrons of prototype paper planes were flying around the Cedar College Sports Centre on Tuesday, September 17.

Coordinated by the Science department, 12 teams studying Engineering Foundations in Year 9 completed the Transport Engineering module. They were tasked with designing a paper plane, propelled by a rubber band, to travel the furthest distance and stay the longest in the air.

South Australia offers enormous potential for Cedar students to pursue careers in the aviation industry, so the College’s aim is to engage students further with science, technology, engineering, and maths, in a fun and collaborative way.

Flight Time

The Engineering Prototype Plane Challenge aimed to promote teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving, while providing an enjoyable way to learn about Aviation Engineering and explore potential career paths.

The Engineering Foundations students created their own designs, built their own planes, and tested the prototypes to determine the best ones. After testing, improvements were made before the final flights.

For the distance category, each team launched their paper plane while spotters recorded distances in meters. All distances were measured from the starting line to the point where the plane touched the ground, as well as its final resting place. The winning distance was over 10 meters. For the time-in-air category, each team tried to keep their plane in flight for the longest time, with spotters recording each attempt using a stopwatch. The winning time in the air was close to 8 seconds. Each team had up to three chances to achieve their best distance and longest flight time.

Cultural Creations

The Food and Hospitality Centre has been buzzing during the last few weeks, as students completed a number of Semester units.

In Child Studies, the Year 11s and 12s have both been looking at cultural influences on a child’s food choices. The Year 12s created an Indigenous Australian inspired 2-course meal for an immigrant family arriving in Australia, to introduce them to our food heritage. The Year 11s replicated common meals from cultures around the world utilising each countries’ different cooking techniques and cultural practices. All meals had to meet healthy food guidelines and be appealing to children.

Creative Cuisine

In Food and Hospitality, the Year 7s were finishing their course by making a pizza with their partner, which was a culmination of the skills and techniques developed over the Term. One of our Year 9 classes also made pizza to conclude their Food and Culture unit, where they have explored a different culture each week including Italian, Greek, Indian and Thai food. They were aiming to refine their skills from Year 7 by making their own pizza and rolling out a perfect circle of dough. They also prepared caramelised onions and a flavoured oil to go on top of their pizzas. The other Year 9 class has been looking at sustainability, and were able to sew their own apron and also upcycle a pair of old socks using tie-dye.

Sumptuous Seafood

In Senior School, the Year 11s have been looking at a new unit around seafood safety and food preparation. After learning a range of techniques, including peeling prawns, cooking crabs, and filleting fish, they chose one meal to refine their skills and present a seafood culinary delight.
