Term 3, Week 6
Changing Seasons
No matter how often you may have seen it take place, the change of seasons from winter to spring always brings a sense of anticipation and excitement as our surroundings shift gears and new life seems to flourish everywhere.
As a school, we are experiencing a similar sense of anticipation as we begin a new chapter under our soon-to-be Principal, Mr Tim Heading. We are looking forward to Tim starting with us in Term 4, and there will be opportunities to learn more about him and meet him in person as he settles into the Cedar community.
At the same time, we are also gearing up to launch our new Cedar College uniform in 2025, which will positively transform the appearance of our school. There’s a lot to look forward to in the months to come!
Exciting Days Ahead
As Acting Principal during this transition period, it has been a joy to be involved in both Primary and High School activities this term. Our students have already competed in numerous sporting carnivals, and these experiences, along with a variety of exciting activities, have enriched both learning and community life at Cedar.

In this edition of CedarNews, we visit the Year 10 Bushwalking Camp, recap our excellent Interschool Carnival results, learn about the recent Bible Masterclass, recognise our Rijken Cup MVPs, and enjoy the fun and colour of our vibrant Book Week Parade!

Paddington, Mary Poppins, and a Large French Baguette….
The 2024 Book Week Parade invited us to embrace different characters, step into other worlds, and celebrate all that is magical about books and reading!
Cedar Library teachers, dressed as Ms Frizzle from The Magic School Bus and Roy the bird from the CBCA shortlisted book, That Bird Has Arms! hosted a fun and colourful morning, which saw our community dressing up as favourite book characters or in costumes celebrating the Paris Olympics.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and a medley of bears from Nick Bland’s picture books featured prominently among our Junior Primary staff, along with Paddington straight out of ‘darkest Peru’ and a ‘practically perfect’ Mary Poppins. Many Upper Primary teachers chose to showcase classic characters, including Scarlett O’Hara, the Mad Hatter, a quite frightening Mr and Mrs Twit, an impressive Little Miss Sunshine, and Mr Wrong (from the Mr Men books) who had trouble even finding his way to the stage!
Student costumes displayed incredible creativity. Olympic superstars, beret-wearing Parisians and even a walking Mona Lisa, rubbed shoulders with Dragon Girl, Ninja Kid, Alice in Wonderland, Dog Man, Minecraft and more.
Enormous thanks goes to all of our students, families, and staff, for embracing our Book Week Parade with such enthusiasm, and for helping to foster a love of books in our school!
And finally, say along with me one more time: “Please exit via the large French baguette!”
Mrs Clare Wright, Junior Primary Library Teacher
'Hole' lot of Donuts!
It was all smiles at our Donut Day fundraiser for Backpacks 4 SA Kids INC. who provide resources that contribute to the care, safety and wellbeing of displaced children in South Australia.
The smell of fresh, warm donuts, drifting across the school yard signalled the start of a delicious day for students in both Primary and High School, and the tasty treats made for an extra special recess and lunch snack.
Thanks to our Primary School Prefects who organised the fundraiser, and OMG Decadent Donuts Adelaide City who supplied the tasty goods, we raised over $750 – that’s a ‘hole’ lot of dough!

Bible Masterclass
Cedar College hosted students from several schools across Adelaide and a team from the Bible Society Australia for the Bible Society Masterclass.
Masterclass events are for young Christians to explore contemporary issues from a biblical worldview. They are held around Australia, but our Masterclass is unique because it is the only one hosted by students.
Our Veta Morphus students partnered with students from other schools to make the day happen. They heard about ‘why the Bible is good news for you’ and ‘the surprising strength of weakness’ from key speakers Dan Paterson, Founder of Questioning Christianity, and Lily Strachan, Chaplain of Robert Menzies College in Sydney.
The Cedar students working behind the scenes to make this a successful day put on a masterclass in demonstrating love through their service to others!

Happening in High School
Students in the High School once again joined in on the Book Week fun, dressing up as their favourite characters, re-living their Primary School days!
Not prepared to let the Primary School students have all the fun, many of the High Schoolers chose to dress up for the day, and although there was less cardboard and paper mache on display, the costumes were no less creative.
Popular book, television, and movie characters were seen walking around the High School bringing a fun atmosphere to the yard, all going to show that you’re never too old to enjoy a good book and bit of dressing up!
Bradman House received a visit from a sporting star recently, with Port Adelaide premiership player and coach, Chad Cornes, dropping in for a chat.
The special visit by the 255 game and two time All Australian AFL footballer coincided with Bradman’s bid to once again win the coveted Cedar Cup.
Bradman key teacher, Mr Tom Giles, interviewed Chad to find out what it takes to be a champion athlete, and also the difficulties that all athletes face in their sporting journey. Chad was very open about the struggles he faced in High School, and encouraged the students to persevere and work hard at their goals.
Students also had the opportunity to field some questions to Chad, as they prepared their Cedar Cup defence plan, and their strategy for the upcoming Big Day In, at the end of Term 3.

Memorable Adventure at Deep Creek
Earlier this term, our Year 10 students embarked on an adventure at Deep Creek, a three-day camp that left everyone with lasting memories. The camp was an outdoor experience and a journey of growth, discovery, and camaraderie.
Set against the backdrop of Deep Creek’s stunning landscapes, students were able to take in the beauty of nature. The lush greenery, the sight of kangaroos hopping across open fields, and the soothing sound of a waterfall nearby set the stage for a quality camping experience.
The days were filled with activities that challenged students as they honed their survival skills by cooking on trangia stoves, mastering the art of setting up tents, and navigating their way through the bush. These tasks not only built practical skills but also fostered a sense of independence and responsibility.
One of the highlights of the camp was the opportunity for students to take on leadership roles. While leading a group through navigation using a map and compass, each student had a chance to step up and guide their peers. This experience taught them the importance of clear communication, trust, and teamwork.
Friendships were strengthened as students worked together to overcome challenges. Whether it was tackling a tricky path during a bushwalk or helping a friend set up their tent, the sense of community was evident. The shared experiences of navigating the wild, facing the elements, and facing obstacles together brought everyone closer, creating bonds that will undoubtedly last beyond the camp.
Time to Reflect
Deep Creek also provided moments of reflection and gratitude. Surrounded by nature’s wonders, students were encouraged to pause, appreciate their surroundings, and be mindful of the present moment. The breathtaking views of the beach, the encounters with farm animals, and the serenity of the wilderness all contributed to a deeper appreciation of the natural world and the everyday comforts that we can often take for granted.
Throughout the camp, there was a strong emphasis on persistence and taking on challenges. Students learned that pushing through discomfort and uncertainty leads to growth and accomplishment, even if soaked whilst doing it. This lesson was evident in the smiles and sense of achievement that followed the completion of the Camp and the joy of a well-earned restful bus ride home.
As the camp came to a close, students returned home with a renewed sense of gratitude, confidence, a deeper connection with their peers, and a greater appreciation for the world around them. The Year 10 camp at Deep Creek was an enjoyable experience and one where lessons learned will stay with students for years to come.
